Dr. Johnson's roots are in the Midwest, but he experienced a diverse upbringing as he moved around the country. His undergraduate education was at UC Irvine, after which he attended the University of Colorado.

He was commissioned as a Capitan with the USAF and completed a one-year AEGD residency at Langley AFB, VA. He was also an active-duty officer at Ellsworth AFB and continued to work with his mentor in St. Paul, MN. A fact unknown to many of his patients is that he has collaborated with his mentor to write a book for clinicians about the TMJ-migraine continuum and another about functional jaw orthopedics. He also completed an orthodontic residency at the University of Colorado and worked in St. Paul, MN, for a year learning functional orthodontics, Roth-Williams Technique, and other TMJ treatments.

Dr. Johnson has since begun a practice in South Dakota that focuses on traditional orthodontics but with an emphasis on protecting and treating temporomandibular joint dysfunction. He remains active with the Air Force Reserves and continues to serve our service members to the best of his abilities.
